I got thinking about this hypothetical situation after I had a problem opening a document from a classmate.
I use Office 2003 and I have absolutely no interest in ‘upgrading’ to office 2007.
My reasons are: 1 – it costs money. 2 – it offers no additional features or services that have any interest whatsoever to me. 3 – it is a waste of extra space and system resources.
So there I am with a .docX file from office 2007… Funny thing, my PDA can open it without trouble in Textmaker, but I can’t do a damned thing with it on my computer without installing a compatibility pack from Microsoft. Of course Microsoft’s website won’t actually let you download that pack… the download page is broken, simply sending you to its internal search engine from the download page…
Now my solution is simple and I have already taken care of things (my PDA can open it and save as an Office 2003 in about 20 seconds – LUV WIFI)
BUT, I was thinking about what I would do without it…
Clearly MS would love for me to give them $$$ to upgrade to office 2007, but I would rather get testicular cancer than give $$$ for software I actively dislike.
So that leaves two Schroedinger’s cat type options – grab a pirated 2007 or go open source…
So now I started thinking from the Point of View of Microsoft.
if I were a software developer, if people are not willing to pay me for my software, what would I prefer?
Would I prefer that they pirate my software and use it that way or would I prefer that they use a free open source alternative?
What about you?
I can see two sides:
If they are using the pirated version, they will develop a familiarity and preference for your software. Perhaps later, they will decide that it actually is worth upgrading (confession – I have done this with both Photoshop and Vegas pro… $1600 dollars of income for Sony and Adobe resulting from 2 years of piracy that would never have happened if I had not been able to develop loyalty, familiarity and skill with those programs… I currently also teach those programs in university clubs and recommend them strongly – further potential and realized income for those companies)
On the other hand, If they use the Open source free version, this income will never be generated. The loss to the original companies will always be ‘perceived’ since there was never any chance that they would get any money for the same services offered by the software. Loyalty, familiarity and skill will be built up with the other program. Later, if that program decides to solicit cash (shareware type donations or by expanding to an ‘elite’ pay version), they are likely to get paying customers from the market segment of those who were not originally willing to pay YOU the software developer whose software the open source variant is copying…. What is even more curious about this is that users who choose this avenue of alternatives are generally more interested in using legitimate programs, hence when they do decide to put money into that type of software, they are more likely to pay than simply move to ‘the next version’ via a torrent or download.
I feel this is an interesting and possibly important question as it becomes easier and easier to get highly functional, virus free pirated software and illicit internet use becomes more and more accepted by the general populace (note the new features in the big 3 browsers with ‘incognito’ modes, presumably a nod towards porn and pirating websites).
Please note: This is not a question regarding piracy or recommending piracy. I am not asking for the POV of the consumer. It is asking the opinion of people who make and write (and market) software. This is not an ethics question.

Hi, I own a start-up moving company in New York City, www.anytimemovingny.com and offer several services. I do have over 5 years experience doing moving and furniture assembly jobs and been through many scenarios. Most of my customers have been a joy to work with and I forged many great relationships, learned a lot and shared a lot of conversation.
For the majority of the time I accommodate evening hours, last minute calls and endured my share of walk ups – possibly I walked up over 200 flights of stairs since I been doing this, seen all types of furniture and met some peculiar characters. Even did a job for a member of the British Royal family and she wasn’t a snob she was real cool but did have an usually large amount of luggage for one person – that was unbelievable.
This past June Brooklyn 12 news did a story about a unique service that I do offer. That was cool the phone rang off the hook after wards but I didn’t freak just remained proactive.
We done moves ranging from room to room(furniture rearrangement),apt to apt, and house to house. We use vans, 10 foot trucks 16 foot trucks and 24 footers with lift gates.
I have 2 main people I work with and some times use day laborers that I have used consistently depending on the season or size the job. Past customers range from friends, complete strangers – referrals, and businesses. Some are listed on my website but needs to be updated.
Now, 90% of the time I’m at the site and deal with the customer I gave the quote to first hand. The famous line I hear is that “I don’t have a lot of stuff” or “this is an easy job” when I arrive sometime it is but most of the time it isn’t.. Those terms mean one thing to the movers and another to moving company.
So, basically I would like feedback from you and what makes you choose a moving service especially at the last minute? Is it price, availability or a combination of things? What do you expect? If we scratch – say a old dresser or something like that – what do you expect as compensation?
I want to know because I enjoy and prefer to run my own business and plan to do so for a long time and would like to improve our service by addressing the needs of actual potential customers rather than guessing. I’m up for the task.
Our goals include building a positive brand and possibly becoming a franchise while keeping the customer in mind 100% of the time.
Outside of doing moving jobs I am musician, music producer, and audio engineer that has a strong sense of family , loyalty and dedication. Thanks for your time.

I think the main 3 points I want to write are:
- that I’m eager to provide first-class customer service
- that I understand the importance of shopper loyalty (this was mentioned in the advertisement for the job)
- I have experience as an assistant manager… building teams… team work… team leader… etc.
I can’t seem to spit it out tho in sentence form. I would really appreciate some help!

Really, the only good thing they put out is the iPod, but to be completely frank, unless you’re a professional music/video editor their computers are worthless.
Don’t get me wrong, they have nice specs, but in all cases of desktops you can build a better PC than any top-of-the-line Mac for little more than half the price. Furthermore, if you have a Mac and you want a better computer, you need to buy a whole new Mac. In the case of a PC, you can just upgrade a few parts to meet your needs, which obviously costs a few grand less to do.
And yeah, there’s a few Mac desktops out there are upgradeable (and only one you can upgrade more than just the RAM and HDD, the Pro I believe), but even then the cost difference between that and a normal PC is so immense that the price advantage for the upgradability disappears.
On a side note, if you accidentally delete something on a PC you can almost always get it back through DOS. If you’re using a Mac, you’re just plain screwed. And the reason there are so few viruses for Macs isn’t because they have good protection from it, it’s because for the past decade or so PCs have help 95% of the market share and thusly viruses were practically exclusively made for PCs. As Apple grows in the market share, they will continually get more and more viruses.
And before you bring up PCs and crashing, let me remind you that Macs have their own version of “crashing” that is just as annoying and almost as prolific.
I suppose my question is this: Is it really just a matter of “OOH LOOK A SHINY COMPUTER” that makes Apple good? Is it the customer service? Maybe as someone who is fairly knowledgeable about computers I would never care for these things, so is it just a matter of a bunch of people who want computers but don’t want to learn how to use one?
