Proton Wira, nothing changes from the model of 10 years ago and the latest model. The looks are 99% same. No good engines, always break down & lots of problems.
For example an imported Japanese car, Honda Civic, 3 changes of models in 10 years. Good engines, good service, save fuel and comfortable.
One of the fact the local lost in the battle. But it’s the represent of Malaysia car industry, so our goverment who can’t loose but in fact they’re loosing, they still wanna protect them.

it’s not only in malaysia, korean cars manufacturers were initially supported by their government as well; however, they managed to pull things so well together and create strong reputable brands, unlike what we are experiencing here in malaysia

So far Malaysia had been fully protect local automobile industry.
One of the reason is also base on Malaysia Boleh Spirit. Most of world industrial countries got they own brand Automobile. Since Malaysia want to reach 2020 vision, to high light this goal achievement is to raise Malaysia own brand.
However, Proton had been run as a government body instate of competition industry. Too much protection had lead this company to doom day instate of build it up.

because it’s needed at this moment. we are only have 20 +yrs in this industry. not fair to compare to those who have 100 yr experience
but strong effort must be put so that they will gradually become more independent.

Because the government owns proton for now and it wants to protect it’s own interest.They also know that if the ridiculously high tax didn’t exist, noone would want to buy local car brands except the really poor people who can’t afford anything else.That’s what happens when you’ve got BN as the ruling party.Blame the daft citizens who keep voting in the same party and insists its good to have a one party parliment and government.In developed countries,a parliment with one party holding 80% doesn’t exist.

Better get your facts right-
how do you think hyundai, kia and daewoo made it big? All of them had benefitted from the government’s policy which had protective policy in place also. though the tax and tariff may not be high, but they had taxes on engine and restriction on parts which saw imported cars having only 3.5% of the total car sales.
Even the U.S have developed policies which protects their local car industry. Any country that wishes to pursue a automotive industry would always have in place policies which would benefit them.
Second, you mentioned about R&D, do you actually think that our local manufacturers can compete with the R&D budget of Toyota, General Motors, Chrysler ? FYI, Korean started their industry in 1955 (Before we merdeka) to get to where they are today, fifth largest production/sixth largest exprt in the world. And you are here complaining about the performance of our local car manufacturer (which only began in the early 80′s)? And they would not have been able to achieve it without the support of the people who had rallied behind the nations automotive agenda.
All these ideas of market driven economy are advocated mainly by the west, organizations that are giants in their respective industry and are able to trample over smaller corporations easily. As a developing country, we must ensure that we adopt policies which are in the best interest of the country and its state of economy no matter how biased it may seem, even if it means that we can’t buy a good quality imported car where most of the $$ will only go back to their country of origin.

1)government policy to grow because as at now Proton hasnt make it to the international market yet and is still depending on local market maybe 10mil ppl (of course not all buying proton). Before Proton’s time, Honda Accord 2litre car in 80′s
were sold at about RM20K. In order for Proton to sell well, all imported cars were taxed at least 100% higher! Therefore, Proton is overpriced!
BAck to now, despites this challenge, even Toyota came out with low cost good quality cars like Vios or mini MPV (cant remember thename), where is Proton gonna be placed? Even Kancil has beaten Proton.
2) is a small market for Malaysia to have a national car thus R n D is dead to be compared to giant! Even General Motors is losing money recently in US , lost to Toyota! GM would have to cut cost on many many areas. And again, where do our dear Proton stand? Korean really having lot of obstacles to break into the international market and of course well done to them they’ve it recently but not after numerous of trials and errors to bring the car to national standard, interms of design, safety and reliability. See how long warranty the Korean could give as compared to Proton to make their products “convinceable”.
The morale here is despite government’s help, proton still dead because of the tidak apa attitude! Beside motor industry is not about ego, it is a very competitive and need breakthrough invention to keep the sales going. Korean made it of course with alot of foreign assistance but we?
3)Mismanagement from Proton ie buying expensive parts etc from cronies or whatsoever (same scenario why MAS failed MISERABLY when SQ making tons and tons of $)
4) Why Proton reaches this stage, the reasons are entirely up to all of you to chose
p/s if the above answerer has overlook on tiny Singapore, then I would like to add that if having 80% majority and could make such a tiny country shine so well and so wealthy (run the country so well), I really dont mind! And that is a very big different. Period!

Just because a man crazy idea for his personal agenda causing our tax payer money to be wasted to come up with Proton and the whole lots of supporting industries.
How a doctor know about business – meeting customers needs? – he know only how people must need his needs.
Still can buy good quality car, if you have money. Even senior government leaders don’t buy proton for their personal cars.
